Corsa a great second-hand buy
THE Vauxhall Corsa built between 2003 and 2006 makes a great second-hand buy with very reasonable prices.
It's a decent family size, with refined economical engines and low running costs.
They are all easy to drive even in the tightest situations with a small turning circle and very good power steering.
Of course, buying 'British' is always cheaper because spares are more reasonable and any garage can do the work. But although the Corsa is seen as British, it's actually built in Spain.
There are two bodystyles, a three door and larger five door. Engines and gearboxes are common to both in the main, starting with a breathless 1.0-litre which has 59bhp, and going up to a 1.2 with 73.
Then comes a 16 valve 1.4 with 88, and the range-topping 1.8 SRi has no less than 123, but which also has a bone-jarring ride.
There are two diesels - a 69bhp 1.3 and a 98bhp 1.7.
Interior
All but base models come well-equipped, with electric windows and mirrors, central locking and a good stereo system. But only the very top end has aircon.
Longer 20,000 mile service intervals must be carried out for the generally good reliability to remain, so don't buy without that essential history.
