Jaguar XK 5.0 Coupe
CAR manufacturers could be accused of using the word 'new' a little too freely but when it comes to the facelifted Jaguar XK there really is plenty to shout about.
The changes on this grand tourer are extensive to say the least, with the result far more akin to an all-new car than a mere mid-life makeover.
The biggest change is under the bonnet, with a 5.0-litre engine replacing the old 4.2-litre unit.
The result is the sort of power delivery that's closer to the previous XKR (385bhp compared to its predecessor's 300bhp), yet it does not mean any added weight and its combined economy figure (25.2 mpg) is marginally better.
It also improves the XK's 0-62mph performance time by almost a second - up to 5.2 seconds from a comparatively slouching six seconds.
The new XK boasts fresh exterior looks courtesy of a new front bumper with two gills carved into the edges. You also get new mirrors, rear LED lamps and body-coloured 'power' vents behind the front wheels.
The car's interior sees a bigger transformation with many bits and pieces 'borrowed' from the XF.
The result is a far more sophisticated and stylish look and feel.
Without doubt the most noticeable of these XF features is the pop-up circular automatic gear selector - simple, yet exquisite and ever so easy to use.
As well as offering a comfortable and relaxing driving experience the XK's performance is nothing short of thrilling. While it might lack the aggression of the Porsche 911 its combination of stately comfort and performance is an enviable and excellent combination.
For most of my time at the wheel I used it in standard drive mode but its handling capabilities can be sharpened by engaging sport mode.
Here Adaptive Dynamics (active dampers), which replace the old CATS suspension, enhances its sporting prowess, though you might find its repeated use will ensure an already thirsty car is thirstier still. That said there's no denying the assistance it provides when cornering.
Much of my time at the wheel was spent on the winding mountain roads that traverse Snowdonia - a perfect environment to enjoy such a vehicle.
Stretches of open road seemed like an invitation for fun and without doubt even the non-supercharged version offers enough performance to satisfy most thrill-seekers.
In grand tourer fashion the car boasts rear seats which some might say are as much use as a chocolate fireguard. In truth I found there to be more space than one might imagine.
My youngsters aged six and eight were certainly comfortable - even on long journeys - though as far as adults are concerned they are really suited to short journeys at best.
Standard equipment is generous on the XK, though if you're spending this sort of money optional extras are hardly going to be a burden. You get touchscreen sat nav, Bluetooth and an iPod connection.
Overall the latest XK is a serious step up, offering significantly improved performance, more style and a lot more car for the money.
