Alfa 166 stands out from the crowd
ALFA'S 166 sleek saloon sold in very small numbers in the UK and that's a shame because it really is a joy to drive, with strong handling and very good comfort.
The first time I drove one I can still remember how delighted I was with everything about it.
This biggest Alfa of its day has all the right bells and whistles as standard and it also has the kind of performance and refinement that some others cannot match.
Yet, when it comes to buying second-hand, it is far, far cheaper than most because it depreciates so fast.
It's a refined grand tourer with an excellent turn of speed even with the smallest 2.0-litre engine, which has a delicious soundtrack.
It produces an excellent 155bhp and reaches 60 from rest in under 10 seconds, so it's no slouch. Next up are silky 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre V6's with 190 or 226bhp.
Although both have superb performance, they are hugely thirsty so go for the 2.0-litre unless you really want one.
Interior
It's a really beautiful car that stands out from the BMW and Mercedes crowd. All have climate control, alloys, full electrics, remote locking, alarm system, excellent power steering and heated front seats.
Many are also fitted with the optional leather upholstery and electric seats, which are superb. Later models are more reliable and service history is a must - do not buy without.
