Beware of breakdown Monday

THE cold snap could cause trouble for thousands of motorists who have taken an extended break over the New Year period.

Drivers who have not used their cars on a regular basis could find themselves stranded when they set out for work on January 5.

The warning comes from one of Britain's biggest vehicle parts suppliers which is predicting many motorists could be left with flat batteries and frozen cooling systems.

With temperatures forecast to drop as low as -13C in some parts of the country over New Year, owners of older vehicles could be particularly at risk.

Motorists may also find their wiper blades damaged by the severe frost and be forced to abort their journey.

Car Parts Direct says it is expecting sales of alternators, starter motors, glow plugs for diesel cars and wiper blades to reach record levels as motorists and garages order spare parts online.

Martin Mosley, of Car Parts Direct, says: 'The combination of freezing weather and vehicles parked up always finds the weaknesses of a vehicle.

'We fully expect Monday to be the single busiest day for years, simply because of how the days fall this year and the sudden drop in temperature after a mild few months.'

Drivers are advised to check anti-freeze levels to avoid their cooling system freezing.
