Renault's first real 4x4

WHEN I first saw Renault's Koleos I thought it looked pretty good and I have not been disappointed from behind the wheel.

It is the company's first real 4x4, although Renault did gain a lot of experience from the Scenic RX4 a few years ago and has built military off-roaders for the French army.

I drove the four wheel drive (4WD) version but sensibly there are also cheaper 2WD models for those who will never need any off-road ability. These are also two seconds quicker to 60 miles an hour because of the lighter weight.

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel in 150bhp form is quite capable enough for the weight as well as being smooth, quiet and pretty economical.

There is also a range topping 170bhp version of the same engine but the 150 would do me fine.

The ride is comfortable and refinement is good, with the only wind intrusion coming from the roof rails.

There is more roll than I would have expected in the corners and, although it clings on well, the front wheels start to slide first when it is pushed very hard.

Interior

The clutch is heavier than I expected and although the steering is light and easy at low speeds, it doesn't give the driver much feedback.

Pricing looks very good, with better value than other recent offerings such as the Ford Kuga, and the interior feels solid and well put together.
