ANDY Seaton is a man with a mission.
He aims to raise as much cash as he can with his new fundraising venture the ‘Lang Way Roon 2010’ which is taking place from August 5 to 8.
Andy is getting on his gleaming, black, Triumph motorbike to head a convoy of no more than 30 vehicles from his home in Crosshill up and around the coast of Scotland – returning to finish at The Royal Hotel in the village, who have been great supporters of this brand new venture.
“They have given me free use of their premises and donated food for our return ceremony, which will include a prize-giving and a fundraising raffle.
“They’ve also had a bottle on the bar to help raise funds,” said Andy, a father of three, Grace, 6, Harris, 5, and Isla 2, and whose proud wife Lynn is backing him all the way.
He’s been a staff nurse at Ayr Hospital’s A&E department for over 10 years, but decided to take on this challenge as a member of Carrick Round Table AND he’s giving up some of his annual leave to do it.
Andy said: “I’ve been a Round Table member for the past three years and decided to do this in support of two very worthwhile charities – the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) and Cancer Research.
“It’s a fact that one in three people will experience cancer of some sort in their lives, which is a frightening prospect.
“Over the years in A&E we’ve seen a number of children who have been staying at Malcolm Sargent House in Prestwick, more so when we used to have a paediatric unit at Ayr, but even now we occasionally have ‘drop-ins’ for treatment.
“I also have personal reasons for doing this challenge and aim to raise as much cash as we can.
“If it’s successful we hope to make it an annual event.
“Many people are helping me, but I’d especially like to thank BAe Regional Aircraft, Elements Fires and Ayr Motorcycle Centre, who are among my main sponsors.
“I’ve never embarked on such an ambitious venture before.
“It’s really an all vehicle challenge as already we have the owners of motorbikes, classic cars, Land Rovers, sports cars, a horse box, and kit cars registered to take part.
“And a few members of Strathclyde Police motorcycle section are also taking part on a voluntary basis to assist us.
“Our community policeman PC Bell will also be seeing us off safely.”
