25 YEARS AGO

AN AYR woman has broken down another male bastion by becoming first female president of the Ayrshire Agricultural Society. Margaret Walker, 72, of Newark Castle, has recorded three previous firsts – first woman president of the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society, first female director of the Scottish National Fatstock Club, and first female president of the Wenger Curling Club in Switzerland.

50 YEARS AGO

WILLIAM Hogg of Glasgow Road, Muirkirk, retires after 47 years on the railways. And he is visited at home by delegation from British Railways who praise his fine record of service and present him with gifts from colleagues.

100 YEARS AGO

TWO Catrine widows, both shopkeepers in St Germain Street, are involved in a civil case at Ayr Sheriff Court. Agnes Taylor is awarded £14 damages, with £5 5s expenses, after suing Margaret Kirkland. Mrs Taylor was bitten on her right leg by a dog in Mrs Kirkland’s care while visiting Mrs Kirkland’s grocery store.
