Waverley sailings from Ayr Harbour

In this week's paper the wrong telephone number for the Waverley office was published the correct numner is 0845 130 46 47.

LAST Sunday saw the first sail of PS Waverley from Ayr harbour to Ailsa Craig. The passengers were rewarded by fine, sunny weather with good views along the Ayrshire coast.

Captain O’Brien circumnavigated the Craig at dead slow speed, and as close as possible, allowing spectators to fully enjoy the seabird life on the island, in the air, on the water.

The gannet colony is expanding more and more into the grassy slopes above the rocks. It confirmed that the puffin numbers are increasing, good numbers were seen whirring along in their comical, fast wing beat.

There also seem to be more fulmars than in previous years. Both guillemots and razorbills are doing well.

July 11 is the last Sunday sail to Ailsa Craig. It will still be a very good time to watch puffins in particular, plus all the other birds, of course. The Waverley will leave Ayr harbour at 14.50 hrs. returning for 18.45 hrs.

Thereafter the sails are every Monday commencing on 20 July at the slightly earlier time of 14.30 hrs. returning to Ayr harbour for 18.45 hrs.

Tickets may be obtained from Tourist Information Centres, from the Waverley office on 0845 130 46 47 or from www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk. Tickets can also be purchased on board.
