I NOTICE in the press that Swindon Council have now lived up to their promise and removed all five of their fixed speed cameras.
The reason being that they EACH cost around £80,000 per year to maintain and they do not receive any of the revenue generated back in fines, but instead like all councils, they get a Road Safety Grant from the government.
The reasoning is that the government wish to distance themselves from the obvious fact that these cameras are purely cash collectors, and are simply a form of local taxation.
With this maintenance figure in mind, how on earth can cash strapped South Ayrshire afford the running costs of the plethora of cameras in and around Ayr, and especially the SPECS cameras on the A77? Are we having to sacrifice our local amenities to compensate for this?
Why not do as Swindon do and replace them with speed warning signs and better policing.
