I AM as one with all those protesting against the closure of Girvan swimming baths.
It is a disgrace that a pool only 37 years old is deemed too costly to upgrade while in Glasgow there are baths over 100 and still going strong.
However the protesters must also be made aware that I was asked to sign a petition just lately regarding the possible closure of the Prestwick Pool!
What leisure facilities would that leave for Prestwick? And many other letter writers to you complain of the poor facilities throughout this area.
Sandra Patterson, like all Girvan residents, is rightfully angry but she is wrong to assume that the north part of this council area is well off for facilities.
One need only look at the scandal of Burns’ Heritage events in a village with no public toilets.
In recent years Prestwick has lost all sorts of amenities and, just like Alloway, toilets have been closed here too. Putting these problems to local councillors is totally ineffective.
The good folk of Girvan will know that there are now two closed theatres in Ayr and so on it goes... Clearly now the roads are in such a lamentable state that council staff and councillors are probably less able to travel around to see what a deplorable state we have reached in this authority area.
Far from the suggestion that residents of Ayr, Prestwick and Troon should pay council tax at twice the rate of Girvan we must soon approach a point where all residents in this council area will contemplate a total council tax strike? Certainly people I meet would rather vote, at the next election, for the Devil incarnate than any of the existing councillors.
