THE LAST show at the Gaiety is about to take place.
The Gaiety doors are closing and being sealed until a deal is struck!
Meanwhile the Gaiety workforce will be redeployed into jobs that they will hopefully be happy and successful in and have what they used to have, creative work and job satisfaction.
On September 22 2006 a Conference on Tourism was held at the Gaiety and different countries were represented. It was stated how appropriate the setting was for the conference as the Gaiety is a tourist attraction and 2009 being the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns birthday. This was discussed and the enthusiasm was contagious.
It is ironic that here we are, the year of the Homecoming and the Gaiety is closed. It is sad to think that people returning to Ayr will be unable to watch a show and perhaps remember the time that they trod the boards at the Gaiety.
Schools shows, dancing schools, amateur productions and many other groups have performed on stage at the Gaiety and will all feel the loss of a real theatre that has also been host to so many famous stars.
The last performance weas on Saturday, January 31. The Cafe Bar will serve its last refreshment. The Booking Office will have sold the last ticket. The Gaiety is going to be closed, sealed up completely at the end of next week. Will the Gaiety be allowed to follow the same demise as the Civic Theatre? Time will tell.
The Gaiety has featured in so many people’s lives. A lady fulfilling a dream of singing on stage at the Gaiety, marriage proposal, proud parents watching their children perform, the pantomime inspiring children to become interested in entertainment and the traditional Gaiety Whirl that entertains all and attracts tourists.
