Cycling accident has already happened

IN REPLY to the letter from Mr Donald Stewart of Maybole in last week’s Ayrshire Post, cyclists of the pavements of our streets is not just an accident waiting to happen, it has already happened.

Last year I was waiting outside Marks & Spencer on the pavement to cross the road. I was tossed in the air by a cyclist on the pavement. I landed with a thud. I had two bruised knees and two scraped hands. I can’t tell you the shock I felt.

Two lovely ladies rescued me. The cyclist did stop, saying he hadn’t seen me and has was on his mobile phone. He said he was within his rights to cycle on the pavement.

We called the police, and guess what? He was within his rights as he was on the pavement. If it had been the road, it would have been a different matter.

I was very, very shaken, battered and bruised, but I didn’t have a leg to stand on.

Is it going to take someone being killed before anything gets done about this. It is a dreadful problem and a more serious accident waiting to happen.
