ON Monday, October 27, I was privileged to stand beside many people lining Ayr High Street to show our respect and gratitude to the men of the Royal Highland Fusiliers as they were honoured with a homecoming parade.
I would have been very proud, if for this special occasion, a saltire had been flying from the Wallace Tower, where the Lady Provost took the salute.
Ayr being a county town, and was one time home to the Royal Scots Fusiliers in Churchill Barracks, it would have been a very fitting tribute to have had a flag flying. As you walk down from Alloway Street into the High Street looking at the tower all you see is an empty flag pole. During the past year I have visited the Border towns, to as far as Nairn, and the Saltire takes pride of place.
Is it because of the economic crisis in the town, a flag has become a luxury item. Surely someone has a Saltire the council could borrow to fly at least on St Andrew’s Day. Also perhaps we could have a flag fund in time to Fly the flag for the bards’ homecoming.
