Troon volleyball women beat City of Edinburgh to go clear in league

TROON women beat City of Edinburgh 3-2 at Belmont Academy to go clear at the top of the Scottish First Division.

In the early stages, Troon played some slick volleyball with Bunten, Ramage and Gow scoring freely at the net. Elaine Krawczyk, Gow and Wheatley were serving tough and, with Jenny Krawczyk and Jones defending well too, the first set was won comfortably.

In the second set, Troon raced 10-4 ahead with Wheatley and Clayton particularly impressive in the block unit. But just as the game seemed sewn up, unforced errorsallowed Edinburgh to take the second and third sets.

For the first time this season, Troon were under pressure. McCall was introduced to the starting line up in the fourth set and despite an edgy start, Troon returned to the form of the first set with Lyall a key factor in defence as the game was tied 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set, Troon returned to their early form to win 15-4 and seal the match.

Troon second women lost 3-1 to South Ayrshire in the Scottish First Division. Gillian Grant was outstanding for South while Duncan, Caldwell, Little, Cruse, Hunter, Barbour and Flynn all fought hard for a gallant Troon side.

Troon men, who have had a good season so far, lost 3-0 to high flying City of Edinburgh in the Scottish First Division. Grant Gwynne was the outstanding Troon player on show.

Against a much older and more experienced Aberdeen Beacon, Troon men's second team lost 4-1. Shanks, Morrison and Ross Duncan were the best of a determined Troon unit.
