Toni McIntosh wins sports personality award

QUEEN of the road Toni McIntosh has run off with a top title...ten years after she first won it.

The Ayr Seaforth flier, who ran 56 races last year, winning the majority of them, is South Ayrshire’s Sports Council’s personality of the year.

Toni, 30, from Ayr, revealed: “I first won the award at the start of my career so it’s nice to do it again ten years on. I had a great year, becoming the first person to win three Scottish championships – 10k, half marathon and marathon.

“I also won the Majorcan marathon which was a nice way to round off the year.”

The local service to sport award went to John Orr, for 11 years the driving force behind booming South Ayrshire Volleyball Club.

Junior sports personality was Shannon Scott of Ayrshire Flyers Speed Skating Club.

She was second in the British Junior Championships and ninth ranked British senior.

Burakudo Karate Club were sports team of the year after a host of individual successes.

The junior award went to the south of Scotland under nine tennis team.

Euan Cooper, Euan Lynes, Courtney McCorkell and Julie Anne Hendry, all members of Prestwick Tennis Centre, won the county cup.

Alyson Hainey of Ayr Gymnastic Club was named coach of the year. A member since she was eight, she has been a volunteer coach for 11 years

Jan Burnside of Ayr Seaforth was sports volunteer of the year.

Club veteran Glen Harrower described Jan as his right hand and unseen engine for more than 15 years.

Prestwick Sailing Club, who have introduced scores of youngsters to the sport, scooped the Provost’s Trophy for club of the year.
