Hockey: Ayr gents beat Lanarkshire

AYR under 14s indoor team secured their place in the West District Shield final with a series of excellent results at the Lagoon centre in Paisley on Sunday.

They beat Hillhead 3-0, drew with Greenock 4-4 and produced the performance of the day to crush Kelburne 9-0.

Aston Kerr marked his return with a nine goal haul. Other goals came from Adam Neil and Charlie Adams with three each and Colin Forsyth. Thomas Coxon and Nathan O'Connell were the remaining members of the team.

The final will take place on December 20 at the Lagoon after the final game in an international series between Scotland and England.

Ayr gents 3rd X1 beat Lanarkshire 11 by 2-0 at a wet and windy Motherwell.

Ayr started strongly with forward William Boyle in good form. They broke the deadlock after 15 minutes when veteran Derek Steel scored from a short corner with a powerful strike.

After the break, Ayr continued to push with man of the match Ross Wallace in central midfield dictating with some excellent passing.

Ayr made it 2-0 when Boyle scored at the back post from a well worked short corner routine. But they had to hang on at the end when they lost Greg Walker with 'flu and Joe Cherry with a foot injury.

This was a good team performance but special mention to cricketers Adam Gilbert and Scott McElnea who are developing as players and add strength to the squad.
