Andy faces the fight of his life

HE’S a big guy with a big talent and he’s set to take on the fight of his career.

For Ayr man Andy Wilson will step into the cage in front of thousands in one of Europe’s top mixed martial arts events.

The 36-year-old tough guy will take on Andy Hillhouse who is a full 15 kilos heavier.

And he’s confident of maintaining his unbeaten MMA record at the Eurofight Xtreme championship in Braehead arena next month.

He said: “I’ve lost a fair bit of weight recently, really because I’ve not been eating so much pizza.

“But the difference doesn’t worry me. I’m pretty confident I can do well.”

Andy trains six days a week at the Wossobama gym in Ayr. He got into mixed martial arts after years of kickboxing and he won his last fight in just 34 seconds.

Andy, who is the manager of Club de Mar nightclub in Ayr’s Arthur Street, was offered the chance to compete in the event – which will feature top MMA fighters Paul McVeigh and James Doolan after Mohammed’s previous opponent Josef Ali Mohammed pulled out.

The fight will be three five minute rounds.

He added: “Braehead has a 5200 capacity. It’s a far bigger venue than I’m used to.

“I was more than happy to step in when someone pulled out. I train all the time anyway so I don’t need to worry about being ready.”

The event will take place on Saturday, October 17 and tickets are available at the Club de Mar, West of the Moon and at the Wossobama gym.

Andy also hopes to run a bus for fans.

He went on: “It should be a good night and I’m hoping to take my own support with me. I’m looking forward to it.”
