A RECORD 38 players from Coylton, Stewarton and Ayr Lawn tennis clubs joined Carrick members for a mixed doubles tournament in aid of charity.
The event, which started eight years ago as part of the national Sport Relief charity day, consists of mixed doubles pairings whose combined ages are at least 100 years.
The event is run as four separate round robin tournaments with players allocated to groups of roughly equal ability.
After the success of the first event, Carrick Tennis Club decided to continue the event as part of their tennis year, with donations from competitors allocated to a local charity.
This year Carrick members nominated the Ayrshire Hospice as the charity for 2008.
The age range of competitors this year ran from under 30 to a few very sprightly upper 70 year olds. By popular request the organisers include a category of the ‘nearlies’ for pairings who did not quite reach the magic 100.
After an friendly but competitive afternoon of tennis competitors and spectators enjoyed afternoon tea served up by the Carrick ladies and a total of over £200 was raised for the Hospice.
