Fishing: Coylton Fishery

The now epic battle between Davie and Ian was won comfortably by Ian this week without any bribes being offered.

Hugh Taylor took his two fish for 5lbs, Messrs Luke and McCabe took a fish apiece weighing in at 5lbs 8oz. H. McCabe weighed in three for 7lbs 8oz, Mr Welsh took three for 7lbs 4oz, Buzzer Bill took four during two short visits for a total weight of 10lbs 12oz. Mr Findlay took three for 6lbs 8oz. Hopefully, there will be a little more rain which will help to freshen the fly pond and cool down the water a little.

Hopper, Fritz patterns have worked well, Nymphs and Diawl Bachs have also fished well during the morning rises dry flies are taking fish well. Mornings floating line set up and as the day progresses intermediate lines are doing best as fish seem to be holding in the cooler depths.

The bait pond in comparison has fished so well all week with virtually everyone taking full bags. The catch size is averaging 2lbs plus. Mr Tarr and Mr Tarr both took four apiece weighing in at 8lbs and 8lbs 6oz. Mr Good from Coylton took four for 8lbs 8oz. Mr Ure and Mr Ure snr took three apiece for a combined weight of 13lbs. Mr Allan took five for 10lbs 4oz. Mr Drew from Glasgow had three for 5lbs. Mr Auld took four for 8lbs 2oz. Power bait and worms are topping the best baits this week.

BURNS TROUT FISHERY (Tarbolton): on Sunday August 3 the fishery holds the Mima Harvey Memorial Open Fly competition, sponsored by Gamesport of Ayr, and also the Burns Trout Fishery Open competition sponsored by Crockets Outdoor and Equestrian of Ayr. Both competitions will run from 8am to 4pm and will be four fish limit. Heaviest bag wins with trophies for first three. Results of the C/R comp were: 1st Joe Morrison with six fish winning £100, second was Allan Taylor with six fish winning £30 while third went to Kevin Andrews with five fish winning £20. The next catch and release competition is on Friday August 29 at 6pm.

SPRINGWATER (Dalrymple): Fly pond fishing very good fishing better in the morning and evenings. G. Cheetham caught four fish for 12lb 8oz and released four more. There have been some good evening rises with shimans and culdies fishing well. Mr Jones had a red letter day releasing 19 fish, the biggest estimated at over 10 lb, green and white fritz done the job for him.

The bait pond been hard, biggest fish this week was 5lb 2oz caught on worm by John Allardyce from Airdrie. The course pond is fishing well. Congratulations to Eric Morris from Wigan on winning the ayrstrike qualifier to reach the final for the second time.

The Springwater bait competition is on Saturday August 16. Entrants must pre book, family pegs available.

PRESTWICK RESERVOIR: The reservoir is still fishing steadily with good bags on all methods, 97 fish caught over the last two weeks. J. Kelly landed one at 6lbs. The club’s last stocking included a good head of brown trout.

Only seven members were fishing last Saturday but despite the flat calm and bright sun, fish were caught including three each in a five minute frenzy for Joe Smolcic and Jim Gillespie, Jim’s weighing in at 7lbs. The club thank all who attended the recent work parties, the reservoir is looking good and litter free.

FRANDY (Gleneagles): The most productive patterns have been the Bibio Hopper, various CDC Hoppers and the Kate Maclaren. Currently the best area is on the south shore from the start of the dog-leg to the dam wall.

On the individual front, G. Keith from Dunfermline kept nine fish weighing a total of 22lb 8oz, B. Dick (Kinross) four fish for 9lb 8oz, Mr Duprey (Callander) four 11lb 6oz – heaviest a 4lb 10oz rainbow and G. Owen (Lothian) three for 6lb. Mr Quinn kept seven weighing a total of 14lb 8oz, Mr Robertson three for 7lb 1oz, R Pedan (Kelty) two weighing 4lb 8oz and R. Baird (Menstrie) kept one fish weighing 4lb.
