Marr open the season with a win at Old Anniesland

MARR opened their season with a 24-15 win over GHK, their first victory at Old Anniesland since 2006-07.

Their two tries were scored by 1st XV debutants with Ritchie McNicol and Alistair Mackintosh providing the finishing touches.

A club spokesman said: “The pre-season preparations resulted in some squad rotation. This is a polite way of saying that as you read the injury/unavailable for other reasons list you may reasonably have thought that it would make a very strong team on its own.

“All credit though is due to those who stepped in today gave a very good account of themselves, making the prospect of competition for places interesting and equally as important –- cover for what we anticipate will be a long and hard campaign.”

Marr’s traditional slow was evident again and within a minute, GHK cashed in what might be the quickest try of the season.

Despite a nervous start when the defence was soundly tested, Marr were able to make the most of kicking opportunities and three penalties from skipper Rory McGee gave them a 9-8 lead.

On the front foot, Marr's first try was a forwards effort with McNicol touching down after a huge pile over with a mass of bodies.

The second came from Mackintosh after electric pace from scrum-half Conner Bickerstaff and the advancing back line.

For the last quarter GHK launched attack after attack and just before the end reaped reward with a well-deserved try.

The 2nd XV lost 25-11 to Glasgow Accies in their final pre-season outing despite their best performance against them in a long time.

On Saturday, the firsts entertain newly promoted North Berwick at Fullarton (3pm). The seconds head to Stewartry. Training is on a Tuesday and Thursday 7pm at Fullarton with all welcome.
