Marr Rugby Club crush Lenzie

MARR enjoyed a super weekend as they beat Lenzie 38-12 to continue their promotion charge from National Division Three.

Almost 60 sponsors and guests attended the pre-match lunch where they were joined by SRU president Jim Stevenson and the president and past president of Lenzie.

Stand-off and vice-captain Rory McGee kicked three early penaltiesbefore centre Sean Little burst through to feed Andrew Gault who went on one of his trademark ghosting runs, dummying left and right to score under the posts. McGee converted.

Another McGee penalty stretched the half-time lead to 19-0.

Lenzie hit back with a converted try before scrum half Andrew Bate grabbed an interception, racing 40 yards to score in the corner. McGee got hurt and was replaced by Luke Davis who moved onto the wing while Matt Pittam shuffled inside.

As Marr chased the bonus point, No.8 Craig Steele stole the ball and set off on a charge up the touchline before passing inside to captain Stuart Miller who cut infield, drawing a defender before releasing speedster Andrew Watson who dashed over the line. Pittam converted.

Marr again switched off which allowed Lenzie another score although the conversion was missed. The last try of the game went to Marr which secured a valuable bonus point.

The Home Reports Direct man of the match, Don Morrison burst through the defence before a nicely weighted pass opened up a gap for Little to charge through. Pittam again converted.

Coach Craig Redpath was quietly satisfied as the win puts Marr back into second place, albeit the surrounding two clubs both have a game in hand.

Marr 2nd XV beat Ardrossan 26-8. Tries: Kris Ferguson, man of the match Mike Ross, Grant Currie. Chris Galloway kicked three penalties and one conversion.

Saturday sees the 1st XV travel to Trinity in Edinburgh while the seconds entertain Strathendrick at home, both games at 2pm.
