Marr Rugby Club go fourth

MARR went fourth in National Division Three with a 37-3 win over Hillfoots at Fullarton Park on Saturday.

But they had to come from behind after Hillfoots kicked a 35 metre penalty after Marr were caught offside.

Marr replied when stand-off Rory McGee gathered a ball spilled and some neat interplay between Andrew Gault and Shaun Little created space out wide for Andrew Watson to score. Matt Pittam added another which McGee converted for a 12-3 half-time lead.

Seven minutes into the second-half, a Gault break led to a penalty which McGee slotted. Then Pittam burst down the wing, breaking several tackles, before touching down for his second.

McGee ran in another before there was a 20 minute break due to an injury to a Hillfoots player.

When the match restarted so did Marr's pressure and they ran in two further two tries, the first from Gault, with McGee converting. The final try came from flanker Ryan Kirk, who crossed the line from a line-out.

There were some good performances with Gault and Pittam both playing well in the back line.

Marr 2nd XV kicked off their season with a 10-7 win against recently demoted Stewartry.

Trailing at the interval, Marr hit back when David Drummond's kick was spilled by the opposition, Grant Currie was first to react to the loose ball hacking on from 22, Grant chased and won the foot race touching down under the posts. Chris Galloway converted to take the score to 7-7.

A Galloway penalty put them ahead and they held on for a deserved win.

Man of the match Steven Kirk dominated the break down. In the backs, Galloway played well at scrum half while Alex Beckwith starred at inside centre.

On Saturday, the 1st XV travel to Lenzie while the 2nd XV head to Ardrossan, both games at 3pm.
