Marr Rugby Club name Redpath

MARR have unveiled former Ayr chief Craig Redpath as their new coach.

The big name signing was revealed at a players’ meeting last Thursday.

Redpath, who played for Melrose and Scotland A during a distinguished career, will take over from current coach Kevin Pattie who is standing down at the end of this season due to work commitments. The move is a major coup for the Troon side who have secured Redpath’s services despite interest from higher placed clubs.

Craig, a resident of Troon, expressed his desire to help the local community and the wealth of young exciting talent at Marr as the main reasons for his decision to return to coaching.

The Marr players then got a taste of what is to come when Redpath took the first part of the training session which followed the meeting.

In other news, Marr travelled to Arran on Saturday to take part in the Arran 7s.

On a glorious day in Brodick with the sun cascading down Goatfell, Marr played some impressive rugby beating Newton Stewart, Garnock, Loch Lomond and the presidents 7 en route to the final.

Marr started slowly but their rugby improved with each game.

In the final Marr faced Hillhead Jordanhill and Marr started brightly running in two tries early on with Andrew Gault and Fraser Ferguson both touching down for the Troon side.

Hillhead then fought back scoring a try of the own. But Marr struck back with Andrew Gault scoring another try to increase their lead.

Hillhead were not finished and they ran in another try to leave Marr with a nervy finish. It was left to the Marr prop Fraser Ferguson to run in a try late on to seal Marr's victory and a winning start to the 7s season.

Marr played some impressive rugby and Scott Bickerstaff was the tournament’s top scorer. Scott was however pushed all the way by Kris Kirk who also had an impressive try tally.

Fraser Ferguson was man of the match in the final and Andrew Gault had a superb afternoon for Marr with several tries and some terrific tackles.

The only down side to the afternoon was a knee injury sustained by stand off Rory McGee which unfortunately puts him in doubt for next weeks league game against Trinity Accies.

Marr slipped one place in the league this week as Helensburgh moved into fifth after an impressive victory over Strathmore. Marr's opponents next week, Trinity, beat Lasswade to move into third in the league. This was Lasswade's first defeat this season, proving that Marr will have a tough game next week as they try to move up the table.

Training continues this week at 7pm on Monday and Thursday nights at Fullarton Park and anyone wishing to play is welcome to come along and join in.
