Ayr Rugby Club set for title party

PROUD president Billy McHarg wants the whole town to join in the biggest day in Ayr Rugby Club’s history.

The Millbrae men will wrap up their first ever Premier One title if they take four points off Edinburgh Accies on Saturday.

And footballer turned rugby man McHarg urges people to flock there in droves to see a glorious chapter being written.

Billy, 51, says: “Our club is 112 years old and never won anything of real note. Our biggest success to date was 40 years ago when Ayr won the Glasgow Cup, beating West of Scotland who had five internationals in their team. But this will easily top that.

“It’s been a fantastic effort and we’re now in a position that everyone wants to play for Ayr. The club is on the map and words can’t describe how I feel.”

Ayr’s celebrations have been on hold since they beat Selkirk in the third week of January as weather and cup fixtures have taken their roll. But barring a disaster, the champagne will be uncorked on Saturday.

McHarg, a former striker, played alongside St Mirren legend Campbell Money at Dailly Amateurs.

He recalls: “I remember going to Hampden to watch Ayr United in a Scottish Cup semi-final 30 years ago just to be part of the occasion. Everyone should support their local clubs and I hope people turn out in force to back us on Saturday.

“The crowd at Ayr is the 16th man and the fact the stand is so close to the pitch makes a big difference. Our home record is second to none and that is testament to the fans.

“We beat Hawick in the cup on Sunday and afterwards a local rugby worthy turned to me and said: congratulations, we’ve been beaten by the league champions. To get recognition like that in a rugby stronghold means so much.”

More than 2500 are expected for Saturday’s match which kicks off at 3pm. If Ayr get the result they need, the trophy will be presented at full-time while there are plans for a party with marquee and band when Glasgow Hawks visit on March 28.
