Ayr Rugby Club are on the brink

ALL Ayr Rugby Club want for Christmas is the Premier One title. And the Millbrae men are within touching distance of creating history.

A crushing 63-7 rout of Stirling County has pushed Ayr ten points clear of second top Heriot’s with a game in hand while Selkirk are still in the mix.

Now magnificent Ayr, who are sweeping all before them under coach Kenny Murray, are the talk of the country. And they’re dreaming of the double as they also set their sights on the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup.

Skipper Damien Kelly is determined to play it low key but he knows that Ayr can now only throw it away.

Kelly said: “It’s great for us to go into the break with such a big win behind us. It was the sort of game which we could have lost because we knew that, given their position in the league, Stirling would put up a real fight and so it proved.

“Even after we scored the two early tries, they came back at us when we went to sleep a bit. We stepped it up really well after they scored and went on to do what we do best. It was really pleasing to see how we could keep that high standard of game going right through to the last minute.

“We are taking nothing for granted though and into the new year we have a hard run-in and will focus on each game as it comes."
