Ayr hockey seconds put up shutters

AYR men second XI, with five under 17s in their team, drew 0-0 at home to an experienced Western fourth XI.

A strong performance from Fraser Ross up front kept the Western defence under pressure. Ayr's midfield and defence combined well although Western will rue missing two open goals.

Ayr’s last league game is on Saturday at home to Kelburne 4.

On Sunday, Ayr lost away to Inverurie in the quarter-finals of the plate. Inverurie took the lead with a superbly struck penalty corner and added two more in the first half, despite good goalkeeping from Scott Hainey.

Ayr had the better of the second half with several attempts on goal before a through pass from Tom Adams to Matt Braund was laid off for Aswin Nair who clinically took his chance to score.

Ayr were awarded a penalty flick but Barry Reid’s flick was saved and although they piled on the pressure, they couldn’t force an equaliser.

Team: S. Hainey, J. Hay, M. B. Hay, G. McCurdy, D. McCallum, A. Nair, F. McCurdy, T. Adams, M. Braund, B. Reid, N. Smith, P Steel.

Ayr ladies travelled to Musselburgh to play against Waverley Inveresk who are third top of the league and in the running for promotion this year.

Ayr, who are sponsored by Lawrence & McPherson Associates, lost 3-1 in their penultimate game.

It was a fast game with Ayr’s lack of fitness starting to show near the end. Michelle Kennedy fired in the consolation goal which started from a hit out from left defence, Alison Patrick 'Monty'.

It was Jena Weir's turn this week for some acrobatics in the middle of the pitch, first by taking out a player from each team, at the same time, and then attempting to catch the ball in mid-air.

A transfer to the cricket team has been discussed!
