PUNCHLESS Ayr gents 2nd X1 lost 4-1 to Giffnock at home.
The Cambusdoon side side lacked incisiveness in contrast to the visitors who took full advantage of slack marking to go 3-1 up at half time.
Ayr were much improved in the second half with almost constant pressure and were rewarded with a goal from a penalty corner.
But they had left themselves with too much to do and Giffnock scored a superb breakaway goal with a through ball being deflected from the right into the Ayr goal.
This weekend, Ayr face a tough challenge at home to Western 4s.

Early pressure was rewarded when Craig Milby ran on to a Paul Steel pass and scored a super goal into the top of the net.
Ayr were starting to control the midfield with James Edwards and Brian Robb again running the show.
At the start of the second half, the game was going from end to end but Ayr struck again with Steel providing a great pass for Milby to score a super second.
EK pushed hard but Chris Taylor made some outstanding saves and Ayr increased their lead with a great goal from Johnny Sutcliffe.
Ayr IVs were 2-0 winners away to Motherwell.
They got away to a flyer when an excellent cross from Tom Adams found youngster Ross Wallace at the top of the circle and he calmly slotted the ball past the keeper for his first goal of the season.
After ten minutes they made it two when, after a good run up the right wing, Fraser McCurdy got behind the Motherwell defence and beat the keeper at his near post.
Motherwell went close from a well struck short corner but keeper Scott Hainey pulled off an excellent save when he got down low at his near post to push the ball past the post.
Ayr should have added to their tally but lack of composure let them down. There were excellent performances from youngsters David Boyle and George Adams while man of the match for the second week running was Ross Wallace.
