AYRSHIRE Harriers just failed in their bid to reach the UK Young Athletes final when they finished third in the Scottish final at Grangemouth on Sunday.
Despite an outstanding effort, they finished 62 points behind second placed Giffnock North who will travel to Manchester with winners Edinburgh AC on September.4 and 5 for the final.
With more than 70 athletes competing, and only five events not covered due to late call-offs and unavailability of some key athletes, the difference in points could easily have cost Ayrshire a trip to Manchester.
In the final points analysis, the Ayrshire females finished second, 31 points in front of Giffnock North. The Ayrshire males were third, 94 points behind Giffnock mainly due to a greatly weakened under 13 boys team.
However, there were still many winning individual performances from the Ayrshire athletes and relay teams.
Although they just missed out on a trip to Manchester there is always next year to dream about and plan for.
