Ayr Seaforth youngsters rise to the challenge

AYR Seaforth’s younger athletes rose to the challenge in the third and final match of Central and South of Scotland Division One.

They finished a close second behind winners Shettleston with 918 points at Grangemouth on Sunday.

It was an excellent team performance, particularly from the younger members, as a number of seniors were conspicuously absent from the team.

Special mention went to Andrew McElwee and Johnny Thompson who competed in seven and five events respectively for the senior team.

After three matches, the overall winners were Giffnock North with 22 league points with Seaforth’s last season’s champions, second with 17 league points and 2696 match points.

Fixtures: Sunday: the third match in the Scottish Young Athletes League at Grangemouth will decide if Ayrshire qualifies for the Scottish league final on August 1.

The team combines under 13s, under 15s and under 17s from Seaforth, Kilmarnock Harriers and North Ayrshire Harriers.

Ayrshire are currently third after two matches and must finish in the top five to qualify for the prestigious final.
