Athletics: School records fall to Dam Park dazzlers

A TOTAL of 22 new records were set at the Ayrshire Schools Athletic Championships at Dam Park.

There were double wins in new record times for Caroline George in the 100 metres and 200 metres and James Gaffney (both Belmont Academy) in the shot putt and discus. Caroline is rated third in Great Britain for both sprint events.

In the 1500 metres, three records were established in three different age groups from Sarah Cassells (Queen Margaret Academy), Finlay Rae (Belmont Academy) and Eve Kerr (Loudoun Academy).

Marr College’s Rachel Whittle, who is ranked third in GB, won the S2 high jump with 1.60 metres.

Awards: Robert Stevenson trophy (best boy middle distance track): Rory McKenzie (Marr) 800m (2.12.1); Simon Campbell Cups (best sprint girls): Caroline George (Belmont) 200m (25.6); best sprint boys: Murray Beckwith (Marr) 200m (23.2).

Association Shield (best girl shield): Rachael Hunter (Kyle) shot putt (9.77); McPate Shield (best relay): Wellington.

Ashton Cup (best girl track): Sarah Cassells (Queen Margaret) 1500m 5.14.5; Campbell Bone trophy (best boy shield): John McCafferty (St Matthews) discus 39.23.

S1 shields: Amanda Hume (Stewarton) 800m (2.31.5), James Gaffney (Belmont) discus (24.94) and shot putt (12.58).

S2 Sandy Innes Shields: Rachel Whittle (Marr) high jump (1.60) and K. Seymour (Stewarton) shot putt (12.82).

Sean Carson Trophy (first senior boy javelin): John McCafferty (St Matthews) javelin (46.70).
