Ayrshire golfers lose opening fixture to South of Scotland

AYRSHIRE lost 11½-6½ to the South of Scotland in their annual match for the Centenary salver at Stranraer on Sunday.
The 12 man team, comprising four under 16s, four under 18s and four youths shared the morning foursomes 3-3 but were soundly beaten in the afternoon singles.
Match details: Under 16: Jack Thomas (Irvine) & Stuart Easton (Irvine) beat Robert Hughan & Mathew McCulloch by one hole; Blair Gavin (Barassie) & Jordan Fraser (Belleisle) lost to Duncan McNeill & Chris Sherman by one hole.
Under 18: David Wilson (Welbeck) & Euan Walker (Barassie) lost to Connor Syme & Connor Bennewith 3&2; Calum Gorrie (Barassie) & Darren McCutcheon (Welbeck) beat Scott Whannel & Brandon Burgess 7&6.
Youths: Robbie Fitzpatrick (Irvine) & Greg Telfer (St Cuthbert) lost to Kyle McClung & Chris Corbett 3&2; Jack McCluskey (Belleisle) & Louis Murray (Welbeck) beat Danny McConnache & Max Jackson by two holes.

lAYRSHIRE was to the fore at the 2012 Scottish Golf Awards dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.
As well as Largs' Sam Torrance receiving a lifetime achievement award, Troon Welbeck's Michael Stewart was presented with the men's amateur golfer of the year award while Kilmarnock Barassie's Euan Walker became the inaugural recipient of the Adam Hunter Award, presented in memory of the late SGU coach.
lENTRIES are now being taken for the Carrick Speakers Open at Girvan on Sunday, April 29.
lFORMER footballer Hugh Burns (Welbeck) led from the front to win the West Alliance meeting at Falkirk Tryst.
The Prestwick publican finished two shots clear of the field with a 66.
