Jim's retiral was announced on TV

WHEN PC Jim McGarry imagined his last day a work, he’d no idea it would be announced on national television.

For news of the 30 year veteran’s retiral was a talking point for BBC commentator Peter Alliss as he covered the final day at Turnberry Open.

Golf fanatic Jim was thrilled when he was charged with escorting American legend Tom Watson for the final round and play off at the championship.

He said: “To end my career by escorting Tom Watson was pretty much a dream come true.

“I was at Turnberry in 1977 and was lucky enough to witness his famous duel in the sun with Jack Nicklaus.

“To think I walked with Tom round the course 32 years on is absolutely unbelievable and the pinnacle of my career.”

Jim, who served across Ayrshire during his career, said: “It was amazing to go round the course with an absolute legend, playing near the top of his game.

“I honestly thought Tom was going to win it again. I don’t think I was the only golf fan gutted when he dropped a shot at the last.

“I’ve been on the receiving end of some good-natured banter about how it was the two old guys together – me and Tom Watson. He’s a little bit better at golf though.”.
