Michael Stewart wins Euro cap call

TROON Welbeck star Michael Stewart has been selected for the six man Scotland team for the European Men’s Team Championship at Conwyn Golf Club in Wales from Sunday to Saturday, July 4.

Stewart made his full international debut for Scotland at the same event last year. Steven McEwan (Caprington) is first reserve.

FOUR boys and six girls from Ayrshire will take part in the Loretto School Scottish Boys & Girls Under 14 Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Largs on Friday, July 10.

Louis Murray, Fraser McKenzie (both Welbeck), Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) and Scott Douglas (West Kilbride) carry local hopes in the boys’ competition.

The girls competition features Emma Hale (Troon Bentinck), Connie Jaffrey (West Kilbride) and Katie McGarva (Troon Ladies) who helped Ayrshire win the Kennedy Salver for the third successive year. Also playing areRachel Irvine from Largs along with Hazel McGarvie and Grace Mackie of Troon Ladies.

FIVE Ayrshire players are in the field for the Firstpointusa.com Scottish Boys Under 16 Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Largs from July 7 to 9.

Two times Junior Tour event winner Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) is joined by Declan Flood (Caprington), David Wilson, Charlie Macneal (both Welbeck) and Gregor Mackintosh (Girvan).

AYRSHIRE girls made it three wins in a row at the West Division Junior Inter-County matches for the Kennedy Salver at rain lashed Clober.

Ayrshire led after the morning on three points with Lanarkshire chasing on 1½, followed by D & A 1 and Renfrewshire ½.

The afternoon singles results were Ayrshire 4½, Renfrewshire 3½, Lanarkshire 2, D & A 2 giving a total tally of Ayrshire 7½, runners-up Renfrewshire 4, Lanarkshire 3½ and D & A 3.

AYRSHIRE ladies were at Strathaven this week to contest the West Division Inter County Jambouree, bidding to win through to the finals in September at Baberton in Edinburgh.

The team was Catherine Malcolm (St Nicholas), Lesley Hendry (Routenburn), Rachel McQueen (Troon Ladies), Lesley Williamson (Kilmarnock Barassie), Audrey Thompson (Loudoun), Liz Keohone (Loudoun), Jennifer Linklater (Largs), Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie).

THE closing date for the Ayrshire Seniors Championship has been extended to Tuesday, June 30.

It takes place at Kilmarnock (Barassie) on Tuesday, July 21 with the Sandy Provan Trophy going to the player returning the best net score of the day. Former Ayrshire president Ronnie Potts (Irvine) won the trophy last year.

There will also be prizes for best scratch and best net scores in age group categories.

LATE entries are still being accepted for the Girvan Boys' Championship which takes place on Friday but players must contact Jim Crawford (tel: 01465 71265) beforehand.

Up for grabs in the 18 hole strokeplay event are the Grant's Trophy and Nick Price Trophy. Start time is 10.30am for 12 and 13-year-olds, 11am for 14 and 15-years and over.

ENTRY forms are now available for the Ayrshire Boys' Championship at Irvine Ravenspark on Thursday, August 6.

Entry fee remains at £8 with the closing date Wednesday, July 15. The players returning the eight best gross scores over the 36 hole event will go on to contest the Ayrshire Boys' Matchplay Championship at Prestwick Golf Club from August 13 to 15.

AYRSHIRE vice president David Miller (Kilmarnock Barassie) finished fourth in the Central Seniors Open tournament at Stirling, earning him ranking points for the first time this season.

Rounds of 75 and 69 gave Miller a total of 144, four shots behind winner Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess). Brian Smith (Kilmacolm) and Eric Lindsay (Blairgowrie) were joint second on 142

Turnberry's John Broadfoot and Ronnie McLellan matched each other with rounds of 78 and 75.

PRESTWICK’S Ross Drummond was joint third in the Ryder Cup Wales senior Open at Royal Porthcawl.

Drummond returned three successive level par 72s to leave him five behind the winner Bertus Smith (South Africa) and only one behind David Merriman (Australia)

STEVEN McEwan (Caprington) was runner-up in the Tennent Cup over Glasgow Gailes and Killermont, finishing on 274, seven strokes behind James Byrne (Banchory). Michael Stewart (Welbeck) was sixth on 285.
