AYRSHIRE strokeplay champion John Shanks (Irvine) suffered a first round defeat in the matchplay championship at Prestwick on Monday evening.

He lost 4&2 to Malcolm Pennycott (Whiting Bay) who won the boys’ matchplay title over the same course in 2007.

TROON Welbeck star Michael Stewart has scored his first win in his opening year of a golf scholarship at East Tennessee State University.

He shot rounds of 72, 70 and 71 for a three-under-par total of 213 to win the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship by one stroke at Keith Hills Country Club in North Carolina.

The 2008 Scottish boys' champion and SGU Junior Order Of Merit winner was tenth going into the final day. His one under par 71 in windy conditions saw him surge to the top of the leader board as the other challengers faltered in the conditions. Stewart came back in 33, three under par for his winning total.

BRUNSTON Castle and Irvine are into the last 16 of the Ayrshire Fourball Championship.

Their pair of Alex Dunlop and Jim Brown beat Scott Moore and Barry Calder (Ravenspark) 3&2 at home in round two and now entertain Ayr Dalmilling or Alton.

Also through are Irvine’s M. Anderson and I. Hogg who had a one hole home win over R. Kennedy and D. Bartlett (Caprington). They now host West Kilbride or Ballochmyle.

PAMELA PRETSWELL (Bothwell Castle), the lowest handicapped player in the field off +2, won the West of Scotland Ladies Championship at Prestwick on Sunday.

Her rounds of 74 and 74 gave her a four stroke victory over Sara Bishop (Windyhill) who scored 79 and 73.

Top Ayrshire player was Rachel McQueen (Troon Ladies) who shared third place on 158 after rounds of 76 and 82. Audrey Thomson (Loudoun) also finished well up the field on 163, with rounds of 83 and 80.
