Walker Cup honours for rising young golf stars

AYRSHIRE golfers Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) and Steven McEwan (Caprington) are two of seven Scots named in the preliminary Walker Cup squad.

The competition will take place at Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania, on September 12 and 13.

lIRVINE (Bogside) have rejoined the Ayrshire Junior Golf League and will take part in the 2009 League competitions.

Members from 1976 to 1998, the club won the under 16 Knockout Trophy in 1987, 88, 90 and 97 and the league championship in 1988, 90 and 91. In their three championship wins, Irvine beat Maybole in the final on each occasion.

Membership this season stands at 17 clubs as Ayr Dalmilling and New Cumnock have dropped out.

Section 'A': St Meddans, Ardeer, Caprington, Largs, Welbeck; Section 'B': Ravenspark, Routenburn, Annanhill, St Nicholas; Section 'C': Belleisle, West Kilbride, Irvine (Bogside), Ballochmyle; Section 'D': St Cuthbert, Kilbirnie Place, Kilmarnock (Barassie), Loudoun.

Under 16 Knockout Trophy, first round: Ballochmyle v Annanhill; Caprington v Belleisle; Largs or Kilbirnie Place v Ravenspark; St Nicholas v St Cuthbert; Welbeck v West Kilbride; Irvine (Bogside) v Ardeer; Kilmarnock (Barassie) v Loudoun; Routenburn v St Meddans. All ties to be completed by May 31.

In the champion of champions trophy, Ayrshire boys' champion Scott Brown is drawn away at Ballochmyle in one of two prelim ties.

First round : Largs v Loudoun or Routenburn; West Kilbride v Ballochmyle or Scott Brown; Welbeck v St Nicholas; Ravenspark v Kilmarnock (Barassie); Caprington v Irvine (Bogside); Annanhill v Kilbirnie Place; Ardeer v St Meddans; Belleisle v St Cuthbert. Ties due by May 31.

The finals of all Ayrshire Junior Golf League competitions will be held at West Kilbride. The Wallace Thornton and Under 16 Knockout Trophy finals are scheduled for Sunday September 13 and the League Championship and Champion of Champions Trophy a week later.

The annual dinner and presentation of trophies will again be held at Irvine Ravenspark, with a provisional date of Monday November 9.

At the recent AJGL Executive meeting, discussion took place on the use of distance measuring devices and it was decided by majority that a local rule permitting their use would NOT be introduced for Ayrshire Junior Golf League events this season.

Consequently, the use of distance measuring devices will not be permitted in Ayrshire Junior Golf League events this season, regardless of any club local rule which allows their use on a course over which the event is being played.

lTROON Portland will play Troon Welbeck in the final of the Ayrshire Winter League after beating holders St Nicholas 7½-4½ in the semi finals.
