Ayr youngsters take to the fairways

AYRSHIRE’S famous for its fantastic golf courses so it’s little wonder kids are keen to take advantage of them.

Pupils from Belmont, Ayr, Kyle Academies and Marr College took part in an 18 hole golf competition at Roodlea Golf Course as part of the sixth Fairway Forward Golf Initiative.

The event was organised by South Ayrshire Council’s anti-social behaviour team, campus police and community support officers.

Youngsters were given four weeks worth of professional golf lessons before the competition.

Councillor John Hampton is the council’s youth champion.

He said: “It is so important that all young people are given an opportunity to experience constructive ways of using their leisure time.

“These young people very quickly absorbed everything that they were taught about the rules of golf and enthusiastically practiced to try and perfect their golfing technique.

“Taking part in a sport is important, but this initiative is also about building life skills.”

Steven Norwood from Troon beat off stiff competition from the other pupils to win the contest and was presented with a trophy.

Councillor Hampton added: “Through sport these young people have learned self discipline, respect for others and much more.

“These are all skills that can be used on and off the golf course and will be useful to them in later years.”
