Paul Gault wins Golf's Belleisle Cup

PAUL GAULT (Westerwood Hotel) came with a storming finish to win the Belleisle Cup on Sunday.

He fired a closing round 68 to add to his opening 71 for a 139 aggregate to win by three shots from Michael Smyth (Royal Troon).

The first round leader was Graeme Gimson (St Cuthbert) with a 70. But the Nickson Trophy winner fell away with a 76.

A maximum field of 76 took part in Sunday’s competition which was sponsored by Slater Hogg & Howison.

In round two, Darren Mallinson (Irvine Ravenspark) set the pace with a 67 for a total of 144, before Gault’s hot finish.

THE closing date for entries into the re-established Ayrshire Seniors Championship has been extended to Monday June 30.

The handicap competition, for the new Sandy Provan Trophy, will be held at Kilmarnock (Barassie) on Tuesday July 22.

Spaces are still available for the West of Scotland Boys' Championship at Ardeer on Tuesday June 24.

The championship, which will be a counting event for the Ayrshire Junior Order of Merit for the first time, is open to junior boys from clubs throughout the West of Scotland. There is a handicap limit of 12.

Entries close on June 9, although late entries will be accepted up to the maximum entry limit of 69 players.

The matchplay championship, for the best 16 placed players in the strokeplay event, takes place at Ardeer the following two days, Wednesday and Thursday June 25 and 26.

WELBECK’S Michael Stewart and Steven McEwan (Caprington)were both undefeated as Scotland won the annual youths match against Ireland at Scotscraig.

Scotland won the singles 3½-2½ for an overall 6-3 victory.

BARASSIE’S Andrew Wright reached the last eight of the Ayrshire Junior Golf League Champion of Champions competition with a 2&1 win away to Chris Lawson (Kilbirnie Place).
