Royal Troon right of way to stay open

AN ancient walking path across a golf course has been saved from closure.

The public right of way on Royal Troon was under threat after course chiefs wanted to make tee alterations.

But walkers launched a campaign to keep the path open.

Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe backed their cause from the start and welcomed the news.

He said: “As recommended by the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, the council is working with Royal Troon Golf Club, and will continue to work with them, on various public access routes across the course.

“This is great news for all those who were worried about losing access to the course.”

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council added: “South Ayrshire Council has a statutory duty to assert and protect rights of way and access in South Ayrshire.

“In fulfilment of that duty, it has successfully worked with and advised Royal Troon Golf Club on the management of public access over their course, including the resolution of specific route issues, and will continue to do so, in accordance with government guidance.”
