FOOTBALL is in the deep freeze...but a team of Ayrshire players were celebrating in the sunshine.
Land O’Burns FC, with a clutch of former junior stars, won the prestigious Tenerife Masters.
The opposition included former Old Firm stars Marcus Gayle, Darren Jackson, Bobby Russell, John McDonald, Dave McPherson and Tommy Johnston.
And a host of household names have played in the long established tournament.
The local lads who triumphed after playing nine games were Mark Hawthorn, John Given, Michael O’Neil, Scott Taylor and Tam Davidson who all played Ayrshire junior football. The tournament was organised by Soccer Experience which is run by former Ayrshire man Martin Tierney.
Martin, who played professional football in USA, Japan and Ireland, is now based in Malaysia.
Skipper Hawthorn, whose business Trademark Cars sponsored the team and part of the tournament, said: “Despite adversity, and a couple of late call-offs, we walked off with the trophy.
“We lost 4-1 to local team Harley’s American Bar FC in the first game but had the satisfaction of beating them on penalties in the final of the bowl tournament.
“Special mention to John Given, who at the age of 58, played in all nine games. It was a fantastic effort by him.”
Former man of many clubs Robert Reilly has pledged to join next year’s safari to the sun.
Any other over 30s, who are interested in playing, should contact Mark at his Prestwick business.
