Irvine Meadow set for Hibs

FIVE years ago, Gareth Turner was playing before three men and a dog at Darvel.

Now he’s preparing for the game of his life that could net more than £100,000 for his club.

Mighty Irvine Meadow, backed by a huge army of fans, are heading to Hibs in the fourth round of the Active Nation Scottish Cup.

The January 9 tie is their prize for beating Arbroath 1-0, the first junior club to beat a senior team.

Turner, from Barassie, said: “It’s eerie to think that my first game for Meadow was a League Cup tie before a handful of fans and now I could be playing in front of 15,000 people.

“Meadow have come a long way since then and playing in a massive Scottish Cup tie against an SPL club at Easter Road is a fitting reward for everyone – especially the committee who work so hard behind the scenes and the fans who have been brilliant with the players.”

Gareth works as an Active Schools Coordinator for South Ayrshire Council.
