PROUD Jim Geddes hailed ten man Whitletts Vics after they came from behind to halt on form Annbank in their stride.
Ayr’s only junior club, who have stepped into the Super First Division for the first time, were staring defeat when Paul McKenzie fired Bankies into an interval lead at New Pebble Park.
And it looked even bleaker when Vics had youngster Matthew Santos sent off for picking up a second yellow card in 57 minutes.
But Whitletts dug deep and equalised through a Lee Boyd own goal. Then with 11 minutes to go, Stevie McKissock grabbed an unlikely winner.
Geddes said: “Maybe having a man sent off helped us because it made me change the formation. I took off David McGivern, a defender, and sent on David Cunningham, an attacker, and it seemed to work.
“We’re probably still odds on for the drop in most people’s eyes but I am happy with the way we are playing.”
AUCHINLECK dropped their first point in the Premier Division when they were held 1-1 by Kilbirnie.
A Bryan Young corner which flew straight into the net gave Talbot an early lead but Jamie Longworth levelled midway through the second-half.
MAYBOLE ended a run of three straight defeats to beat GLENAFTON 3-2 after trailing 2-0 at the break.
Boss Peter Leonard hailed theirperformance in a stormy second-half, which produced four red cards, as their best of the season.
He said: “Stuart McGrady and Jordan Kerr were both outstanding. McGrady now has nine goals and is a threat from anywhere. He’s a great athlete and senior clubs should be looking at him.”
Goals from Simon Eeles and Aaron Scoular had Glens in charge at the interval. Stuart Peacock led the fightback with a header from a corner before Paul Kerr, with a header and McGrady, with a super finish, won it in the last five minutes.
Maybole had Chris Clark sent off while Gordon Moffat and Dougie Ramsay saw red for Glens.
CUMNOCK stay second in the First Division after beating Clydebank 3-1 but there was controversy when a super strike from Ian Cashmore was chalked off.
Tom Currie’s early strike was cancelled out but Cumnock won it with goals from Paul Gordon and Stevie Agnew.
GIRVAN came from behind to beat Dalry 3-2 despite having Tony Murphy sent off. Steven Shankland, Michael Moffat and Darren Mitchell got the goals. Kevin Biggar missed a last minute penalty.
KELLO made it eight wins out of eight in the Ayrshire League when they beat CRAIGMARK 1-0 but had en endure a nervy finish.
The Kirkconnel high fliers weregifted the lead in 23 minutes when Greg Livingston robbed a dithering defence and rounded keeper Stevie Douglas before stroking the ball home from a tight angle.
They should have doubled their lead midway through the second-half when Liam Fleming was brought down for a penalty but Douglas saved easily from Phil Middlemiss.
Craigmark then pushed hard but Cameron Menzies saved well from their best effort by Scott Caldwell.
TROON boss John Redmondadmitted he has much work to do after crashing 4-1 at Kilwinning.
Redmond, whose team entertain Renfrew in the West Cup on Saturday, said: “We are going through a bad patch which we will need to sort quickly but we’ll be back.”
Rhys Galloway got Troon’s goal from a free-kick to make it 1-1 but Buffs were always streets ahead. Goals came from Chris Wozencroft (2), Kris Mitchell and Michael Fulton, their new signing from Whitletts.
LUGAR stay third after beating Ardeer 3-0 with the highlight a Dougie Allardyce header from an Andy Rae cross to round off a super flowing move. Nicky Faulds and Rae got the other goals. Lugar will listen to offers for striker Gary Robertson.
