DAVID GILLIES hopes lightning can strike twice in the final of the Citylink Scottish Junior Cup.
The former Ayr United striker bagged the only goal as Auchinleck Talbot squeezed past Rob Roy to set up a Rugby Park final against Clydebank on May 31.
The Beechwood hero said: “I scored with my first touch against Tayport in the 2006 semi and we went on to win the cup. Hopefully, it’s a lucky omen and we can go on to beat Bankies in the final.
“I knew as soon as Gavin Collins got a touch to a free-kick that I had a chance. I had been playing midfield the last few games but I was pushed up front for the last ten minutes and it paid off.
“Talbot’s history will always make us favourites in the final but Clydebank have beaten Pollok so they can’t be bad.”
Gillies enjoyed his six month stint at Ayr but was frustrated that he never broke into the first team. He said: “The boys in front of me were playing very well and while I could have stayed I wasn’t willing to wait. I had been at Talbot before so I knew what they were all about and was delighted to go back.
“I’ve scored seven goals since January so things are working out well for me.”
Seven times winners Talbot are hot favourites to shoot down Bankies but boss Tommy Sloan has warned they will be no pushovers.
