Sunday Football... Door is slammed shut on hopefuls

THE AGM of the East Ayrshire Sunday League threw a spanner in the works of any new clubs wishing to join after a proposal by one of the clubs to keep the league to eleven teams received an unanimous vote.

A few clubs felt aggrieved about the number of mid week matches they were forced to play and felt the standard of football decreased as clubs were forced to chase around for players on a Tuesday or Thursday night.

The team lodging the proposal pointed out that during their last nine league matches, only three were played on a Sunday.

The other six teams in question struggled to field a decent side which ended their chances of the championship.

Match secretary Jim McAuley was less than pleased about the outcome as he had advertised for new clubs to join the league.

This saw applications being lodged by Dunaskin, Clootie Dumpling and Fourways, but due to the outcome of this proposal, these clubs will be refused entry.

A spokesman for the league intimated that, although the amount of clubs was an issue, the clubs themselves also agreed that the league was set up for East Ayrshire.

He also added that people can point to the two Ayr clubs that play in the league at this moment but they were founder members and are entitled to their position in the East Ayrshire set-up.

He also suggested that there is certainly an interest for Sunday football in the county capital and maybe teams should get together and set up their own league.
