Ayr Utd Football Academy finish league with win

THE Ayr United Football Academy sides completed their league programme with the under 16s turning in an outstanding display against Queen of the South in Dumfries on Sunday.

Fielding two trialists as well as drafting in four players from the under 15s, the new look proved that this United side is preparing well for the competitive under 17 league next season.

Trailing at the break despite having the better of the play, Ayr hit back when the impressive Scott Archer grabbed a double, the second a penalty.

Both trialists got their name on the scoresheet. One with a long range effort that struck the post and went in off the keeper while the striker waltzed past four defenders before slipping the ball past the advancing keeper.

The four players who stepped up from the under 15s, defenders Jo Maxwell, Gareth Armstrong, David Hendry and striker Roddy Paterson didn’t look out of place against a stronger, more physical Queens side.

Boss John Stewart said: “All the players deserve a lot of credit. Queens are a very strong side at this level and had already beaten us twice this season while some of their players have already been offered full time contracts.

”Our players have proved they are good enough to play at pro-youth and have now set the benchmark for next season.”
