Ayrshire Post sponsors Ally MacLeod suite at Somerset Park

THE greatest players from the Ally MacLeod era at Ayr United are to be honoured – with help from Ayrshire Post readers.

For your favourite local newspaper is to sponsor the hospitality suite at Somerset Park.

It will be renamed the Ally MacLeod Suite. And the five hospitality rooms within will each be named after a United star who played under Ally.

We want YOU to tell us who these players should be.

We’re giving you 12 of Ally’s top servants to choose from – the famous team of the late 60s which diehard fans still recite to this day – Stewart, Malone, Murphy, Fleming, Quinn, Mitchell, Young, Ferguson, Ingram, McCulloch, Rough.

And we’re also throwing in wing wizard Henry Templeton who was an Ally hero in the late 80s.

Readers are asked to nominate their favourite player. The top five votes will be named as the five boxes within the Ally MacLeod Suite.

It will be a tough call but it’s up to you to decide.

The choice is laden with characters and real Honest Men.

Alex Ingram was Ally’s first signing, Davie Stewart went on to play in a European Cup final with Leeds, Dick Malone was an FA Cup final hero with Sunderland, John ‘Spud’ Murphy was an unflinching one club servant.

Rikki Fleming and Stan Quinn were assured defenders, Dougie Mitchell, Jackie Ferguson and Davie McCulloch were midfield passmasters while Cutty Young and Bobby Rough were flying wingers.

Wee Henry Templeton was a magician who helped Ally win the Second Division title in his third stint in charge.

Phone / text or post your entry to Ally MacLeod Suite vote, Ayrshire Post, Nile Court, Ayr KA7 1PX.

Alternatively, you can leave your entry in the box inside the Somerset Park club shop at Saturday’s game against Livingston.
