Voice of Reason: August 13

THREE games from silverware.

The Alba Challenge Cup – it may not be the coolest of the gang.

But like a guilty pleasure, it’s about to become our very good friend.

Indeed, Tuesday night’s walloping of First Division giants Cowdenbeath has put Ayr United on the verge of greatness.

Just a shame that only 556 saw such a massive occasion.

But they’ll soon come flocking back with the promise of a quarter-final trip to the likes of Peterhead.

This, my friends, is what the magic of the cup is all about.

Excitement levels at VoR are reaching fever pitch.

It’s great to be back.

TWO reasons for cheer off the park.

The first is this Panda Pals initiative to get free season tickets for kids.

Brilliant idea and well done to the FANS behind that one.

Secondly, major props to Ronnie McJannet.

Another fan realising action is needed, and he’s duly taken the helm of the club shop.

One refurb later and it’s looking superb. Finally packed with supporters and big plans ahead.

So well done to both projects.

BRIGHT points from Saturday’s opening game?

After the weather and Jonathan Tiffoney, I’m struggling.

But wait, here comes a beacon of brilliance on the horizon.

Just a shame he hung up his boots 20 years ago.

Yes, let’s talk Diegro Marahenry.

The legendary number seven was back at Somerset for some much needed positive publicity.

So well done to whoever arranged that stunt.

Henry Templeton is an icon to a whole generation of Ayr fans with good reason.

And he’s lost none of his appeal in 2010.

Wouldn’t mind having him back on the wing either.

THE lights are on – and it’s showtime in betting corner.

After last season’s mug job on the line from Iain Ferguson, he’s returned to defend his crown.

But he won’t be alone.

We’re being joined by a third party for a triple threat battle that promises to be meaty.

Step forward Prestwick Cricket Club ‘team manager’ Allan Haggo.

A man who, as my picture proves, has lost none of his youth.

Same rules as always, winner takes all. Oh, and this season’s contest is kindly sponsored by Fergie’s bosses at Ayr Racecourse. Nice.

Week one kicks off with Haggo going Alloa 3, East Fife 1 while Fergie opens with Inverness 1, Celtic 1.

The VoR weighs in with a tempting Hearts 2, St Johnstone 0.
