Ayr United run the rule over trialists

BRIAN REID has urged a clutch of trialists to prove they are good enough to win deals but insists there is no panic at Somerset Park.

Former Queen of the South and Clyde striker Gary Arbuckle, who began his career with Celtic, has shown up well at training.

And ex-Celtic youth defender Grant Gallagher, East Stirling hit man Andy Rodgers and Clyde full-back Willie McLachlan are among those also trying to impress.

Kenny Connolly, who was released at the end of last season, is also back in training hoping to win a new deal.

Reid was left bitterly disappointed when a highly rated English midfielder, who had been due to go on trial, called off after getting an offer from elsewhere.

He said: “He would have been a good acquisition and accommodation was fixed up. But I got a phone call last Friday - that’s football.

“I am still looking to sign six players but it’s a game of patience. There is certainly no panic as there is still time before the nitty gritty starts.

“I am pleased with what I have so far and now it’s just a case of filling in the spaces. Strikers will be important but I have offered Mark Roberts a deal and am confident he would do us a good job.

“Marko was never lightning quick but he has a great football head which he hasn’t lost. He and a fit Gary Arbuckle would be a good combination.

“Gary broke his leg while playing for Queen of the South against Morton but he is on the way back and has always been a decent player.”

Girvan striker Michael Moffat, who took part in last weekend’s double training sessions, is set to get a chance in next Wednesday’s challenge game at home to Stranraer.

Reid said: “Michael has looked comfortable in the environment. I would like to judge him in a game and hope he will be involved at some point against Stranraer.”

The manager will also run the rule over a trial match at Belmont Academy on Sunday. Set up primarily to recruit for the Academy’s under 19 team, it will also feature several over age players who have contacted the club.

Two of last season’s squad are set to move on. Ryan Borris is bound for Stirling while Billy Gibson is a target for Alloa who are splashing the cash in a show of intent.
