Ayr United pair in fitness race

AYR have fitness doubts over defenders Billy Gibson and Kevin James for Saturday’s tough trip to Ross County.

Gibson is back in training after a groin strain but is short of match practice while James came off with an ankle knock during Monday’s 1-0 cup win over Brechin.

If both fail to make it, Ayr will be scrambling for numbers for the long trip north.

However, Ryan McGowan returns to the squad after missing the Brechin game. The paperwork to extend his loan deal wasn’t completed before January 9 making him ineligible for the tie.

There are no dates yet for Ayr’s frozen off games against Partick (home), Morton (away), Queen of the South (away) and Airdrie (home). But they are expected to kick off midweek in February.
