Ayr United under 19s go top

AYR United Academy under 19s went top of their League Cup section with a 2-1 win over Partick Thistle.

But results elsewhere mean their hopes of reaching the semis are now in the hands of others. With no game this Sunday, United must hope that East Stirling beat Dumbarton if they are to make the last four.

Scott Arthur, stepping up from the under 17s, swung in a superb cross and Aaron Connelly rose to head the ball into the top corner. Then Lloyd Kinnaird poked home a second goal.

Ayr were left hanging on when Thistle pulled one back in the 87th minute but they deservedly held out.

In the SFA Youth Initiative, the under 16s impressed coach Steph Ferguson in a thriller against Clyde. Roddy Paterson hit a brace while there were singles from Billy Hutchinson, Kieran Paterson and Luke Sinclair.

The under 14s were also involved in a stormer under floodlights at Lesser Hampden. Goals came from Shankland, Rae and Campbell.
