Ayr United now need to rely on other results to be crowned champions.
The Honest Men produced a nervous display in Brechin while Raith Rovers won away at Stirling Albion. Raith are now a point in front with three games remaining.
The writing was on the wall early when Brechin City were awarded a penalty when Dean Keenan felled Rory McAllister inside the box but Charlie King cracked the ball off of the post.
Ayr struggled to get a foothold in the game despite having the lions share of possession. Chris Aitken twice went close before the break but the teams went in level.
After 64 minutes Brechin got their noses in front when McAllister headed home a Darren Smith corner. The result ensures that Brechin will be involved in the play-offs for promotion with only the champions gaining automatic promotion the second, third and fourth placed teams will be joined by second bottom from the First Division.
Ayr are home to East Fife next Saturday while Raith will play Brechin City. There could be a few twists and turns before this title is decided.
